About this game

Name 100 Men is a free online memory challenge. The goal is simple: name 100 notable men from any field — history, science, sport, music, film, politics, literature, or anything else you can think of. It sounds easy, but most people find themselves stuck well before they reach 100.

The game was inspired by the viral Name 100 Women challenge. Every guess is validated instantly using Wikidata, the free and open knowledge database maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation. If a person has a Wikidata entry and is recorded as male, the guess counts. Stage names and widely-known aliases are accepted too.

After finishing, you'll see a detailed results screen showing your time, your wrong guesses, the occupations you named the most, and which countries your picks came from. It's a great way to discover any blind spots in your general knowledge.

How to play

Playing is straightforward:

  1. Type the name of any notable man in the input box and press Enter or click Go.
  2. The game checks the name against Wikidata in real time.
  3. If the guess is valid, it appears in the green "Correct" list with the person's occupation.
  4. If the guess is not found or doesn't match, it goes in the red "Wrong" list.
  5. The timer starts on your first correct guess.
  6. Reach 100 correct guesses to win and see your full results.

Tips & strategies

The best approach is to think in categories rather than trying to recall names randomly. Work through one category at a time — once you've exhausted it, move on to the next. Here are some categories worth exploring:

Switching between continents can also help — most people default to Western names and miss a huge pool of valid answers from Asia, Africa, and South America.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use nicknames or stage names?

Yes. As long as the person has a Wikidata entry under that name, it will be accepted. Most widely-used stage names and nicknames are recognised.

Why wasn't my guess accepted?

There are a few possible reasons: the person may not have a Wikidata page, they may not be recorded as male on Wikidata, or the spelling may not match closely enough. Try an alternative spelling or a more well-known version of the name.

Does the timer stop if I close the tab?

No — refreshing or closing the tab resets the game entirely. All progress is lost. Keep the tab open while you play.

Can I guess the same person twice?

No. The game checks both the name you typed and the underlying Wikidata ID, so guessing the same person under a different spelling won't work either.

Is there a time limit?

No time limit. The timer counts up so you can see how long it takes, but there's no pressure. Take as long as you need.

What counts as a "notable" person?

Anyone with a Wikidata page counts. This includes historical figures, celebrities, athletes, politicians, scientists, and many others. People you know personally — friends, family, colleagues — almost certainly won't have Wikidata pages and won't be accepted.

How is this different from Name 100 Women?

Same concept, different challenge. Both games test general knowledge and memory. Many people find one significantly harder than the other — try both and see which you find more difficult.
